In late 2014 a lawyer for California’s largest school district, the L.A. Unified School District, successfully argued that a 14-year old, 8th grader was partially responsible for being raped and sexually abused by her teacher Elkis Hermida. The attorney who argued on behalf of the school district, W. Keith Wyatt, was subsequently fired after an interview that aired on KPCC, a local public radio station. NBC News interviewed California Child Abuse Attorney, Anthony DeMarco regarding his thoughts on the controversy as a local child sexual abuse expert.

Sex abuse attorney Anthony DeMarco negotiated a $13 million settlement with the Roman Catholic Church’s Los Angeles Archdiocese. Twenty-six victims of child molestation by Church clergy in Los Angeles were represented and were awarded the money. The child abuse victims were a mix of men and women who were sexually abused when they were children. Some of the children were altar boys. Others attended Catholic schools where the priests worked and taught. One of the accused priests has been seen ministering in Mexico even after his duties were removed by the Church. The most significant part of this case is that Anthony DeMarco successfully demonstrated that the Los Angeles Cardinal, Roger Mahony, actively and intentionally hid information about the child molestation from investigators and protected the interests of the priests over the children who were abused.

Anthony DeMarco is well known for discovering evidence that links Catholic church officials directly to the clergy sex abuse scandal. In his latest discovery, the California clergy abuse lawyer uncovered documents and Church personnel files that show Cardinal Roger Mahony’s explicit involvement in the sex abuse cover up. Cardinal Mahony, among others, made numerous attempts at shuffling pedophile priests around to different Catholic Diocese instead of contacting authorities or launching criminal investigations. Anthony DeMarco was able to make some of the incriminating documents released to the public.

In October 2012 the Law Office of Anthony DeMarco successfully argued in the U.S. Supreme Court for the public release of priest personnel files held by the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Based on our litigation, the California Appellate Court agreed that the personnel records for Catholic Priests who worked within the Los Angeles Archdiocese and were accused or convicted of child molestation should be public record. This was a big victory for us and one that mirrors the previous release of records that won in San Diego in 2010. Links are provided to access the records by priest name.

In 1963 a letter written by a Catholic administrator from New Mexico tells the pope to stop giving specialized treatment to pedophile priests and recommends that abusive priests be removed from active ministry. Anthony DeMarco notes that the letter constitutes evidence that the Vatican knew or should have known about clergy abuse in the U.S. for decades. The letter uses language that suggests the depth of the churches knowledge, claiming that pedophile priests should be removed and to “not shuffle them around, not pass them from diocese to diocese.” After discovering the letter, which was kept confidential under a court order, Anthony DeMarco argued for its release to the public.
